A fire broke out in Barangay 31, Maypajo, Caloocan City at around 10:30am wherein 80 families were affected and displaced.
Barangay 31 Chairman Jose Mercado said most of the affected are informal settlers who are beneficiaries of the National Housing Authority (NHA) Pabahay Program, wherein they families pay a monthly fee to NHA until they can fully own the lot where they are currently settling in.
Caloocan City Fire Marshall F/Supt. Roel Jeremy G. Diaz said they are looking into reports that the fire started at a junkshop when flamable materials from dismantled machineries were accidentally ignited by a lighted cigarette butt thrown at it.
Diaz added that the firemen had a hard time controlling the fire as LPG tanks from burning houses simultaneously exploded, causing the inferno to spread through the neighborhood.
For his part, Caloocan City Mayor Oscar Malapitan ordered the City Social Welfare Department (CSWD) to extend assistance to the displaced families, particularly the distribution of cooked foods and clothings.
Malapitan also called the City Planning Office to look for covered areas to temporarily house the estimated 400 individuals affected by the fire.
