Caloocan City Mayor Oscar Malapitan has announced that all senior citizens in Caloocan City will receive gift packages on their birthday, starting October 2014.
Malapitan stressed that it is about time for the city government to give tribute and importance to the parents of the working age group, who tirelessly dedicated their time and efforts in rearing-up and providing education to their children, “and these children are now the income-generating adults, the
productive machinery of our society”.
The birthday package is a reusable tray, filled with grocery items such as spaghetti, cheese, canned goods, sauces, with a birthday card signed by the mayor.
“Our city’s Social Welfare and Development Office, in coordination with the Office of the Senior Citizens’ Affairs (OSCA), are now stock-piling birthday gifts of 7,418 packages which already covers the senior citizens of Caloocan City whose birthdays are from October 2014 up to January 2015”, the mayor said.
Malapitan explained, “the distribution of these packages, right at the doorstep of the birthday celebrators, is a logistical nightmare, numbering about 400-500 house deliveries per week”.
“But your city government will walk that extra mile to deliver our commitment to our parents and grandparents, the foundation that built the virtues and morals of our communities”, he added. As this developed, the OSCA has expressed alarm over the influx of applicants for senior citizens’ registration in their office, as words have circulated that the city hall will be distributing birthday gifts in the coming days.
Mayor Malapitan assured the senior citizens of Caloocan City that they will all be accommodated by OSCA, along with other benefits such as discounts in groceries and medicines, and free admission tickets in cinemas, as soon as the new SM City Sangandaan opens its doors.
